Hey friends, Please join me in welcoming TJ Robertson to the podcast. Tj, thanks for being here today.

[TJ Robertson] Hey, thanks for having me.

[Sami Bedell-Mulhern] Okay, so AI conversations are everywhere. Why is AI so exciting for you? How did you kind of get into teaching and integrating that into your systems? Just kind of share a little bit about that with us.

[TJ Robertson] Yeah, I've been doing digital marketing since 2009, mostly SEO, a little bit of Google Ads. And 2014, I joined with another agency and, and helped grow that. And things were going really well, and we had a team of writers and you might see where that's going. And we were doing marketing for some local small businesses. But then, of course, in winter of 2022, something funny happened. ChatGPT came out, and it was very apparent that this was going to be able to do the job of those writers immediately. And we loved our writers and it was really hard. But the truth is that immediately ChatGPT could do actually a better job when we gave it the right prompts. And that's not to say that ChatGPT is better than humans. Prolific writers, anyone that is really an expert on what they're writing on can still do a better job, I think, with enough time. But when you're doing content as a digital marketing agency, you're generally not employing writers that are an expert in what they're writing on. You're employing writers that are going to Google, learning a bit about the topic by reading other articles and then essentially rewriting what they just learned, which is exactly what ChatGPT does, but at scale and much more effectively. It was very clear early on that this was going to dramatically change our industry. And I think eventually all industries but digital marketing probably has been more affected than any other industry. And so that I was already pretty interested in AI, honestly, since about 2016, I saw a TED talk that just got me thinking, like, man, like, I think I do think eventually it's going to come for all of our jobs, who knows how long. But ChatGPT really just like, oh, it's coming faster than we thought. We need to start making some changes. Since then, I pretty much always have some kind of large language model on my second monitor I try to incorporate into all my work. Sometimes it ends up wasting more time than it saves. But in aggregate, once you get that intuition for what it can do and what it can't do so well, then it really does. I think most of my tasks I can do two to ten times as fast as I used to be. And that's not going to be true for every industry. Digital marketing is especially true. But it's been very fun and exciting to figure out how to use it in a way where the output is very high quality and it's much more efficient and cost effective.

[Sami Bedell-Mulhern] Yeah. I think the thing that I love the most about it is its ability to allow small teams to be more consistent in their marketing. So even if you aren't hiring an agency or you yourself are not a digital marketer, as you're trying to promote and market your nonprofit, it can help you just with that consistency and that repurposing and that kind of getting what you need out there, because without having to hire a whole nother person. So if you're running a lean team, you can just kind of learn the strategies, figure out what you need to do, and then kind of push out your stuff so that you. You're. You're hitting those goals and those benchmarks that you want to hit. And we've had a lot of conversations about AI on this podcast this year, so today I really want to focus on that repurposing. So let's just assume that you have a piece of content, whether it's a blog post or our podcast or whatever, you've already got that created. That's already done, kind of. Where do we want to start with using something like ChatGPT. And that's not the only tool out there. You could be using Gemini or Claude or whatever. It doesn't really matter. Right. Which tool you're using. But how do we get started with kind of coming up with that repurposing plan? And how do we start that conversation with our favorite AI tool to kind of get that plan put together?

[TJ Robertson] Yeah, I think that's the right question. And it can take a little while to get it working, but it's worth the time. It's worth the time investment. So, like, yeah, I pay for ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude for my entire team. Because you're right, you can do this in any of them, but they each kind of have something that they're especially good at. For most content repurposing, we're using Claude, at least, is the one that actually finishes the content. We might have Gemini and ChatGPT in the. In the workflow somewhere. The reason we like Claude is I think it's the best at writing, and also it's the best at adhering to large amounts of context. And that's really like the secret ingredient to making this work is just a ton of. Of context. And so before I'd even start trying to build the workflow, I'd want to make sure we have comprehensive information on the brand that we're making content for. And so for our clients we create something called a brand Bible. It's like a 20 page Google Doc that's just everything anyone would ever want to know about this brand. All their services, detailed descriptions, the URLs on their website, their unique selling points, their brand voice, everything that you would want to train someone on if they were going to be representing your company out in the world. And then we create in Claude something called a brand ambassador. And this is a cloud project. If you're using ChatGPT, they're called custom GPTs. If you're using Gemini, they're called Gems. They pretty much all have these. And it's, it's just, it's a folder of documents. They're really easy to make. You just hit create project, dump whatever documents in there. So you're going to dump this brand Bible in there and then a set of instructions just for this project. So our brand ambassador instructions are pretty simple. It's like you represent this company, consider the target audience and what's going to be important to them. Thoroughly review your brand bible and any other documents we've given you before answering any requests. And then at that point we can ask it anything. And so just like you were saying, it's really good at getting our whole team on the same page because a lot of times, you know, maybe some of your team is on, is aware of a particular brand or project and other teams aren't. Suddenly, if you have this brand ambassador, anyone on your team can just go and talk to the brand, ask whatever question they want and if we've done our job well, it can just respond as if they're talking, you know, in our case directly to the client. If you're training on your own brand, you can just give it to someone on your team and just be like, hey, don't bother me until, you know, you've tried bothering the brand ambassador and can't get a response.

[Sami Bedell-Mulhern] Yeah, because now your grants team and your marketing team and your development team and your services team, like they can create things for themselves or language and know that it's kind of approved. Like it kind of can remove some of the bottleneck of people being able to go out in the community and kind of raise awareness for whatever it is that they're doing.

[TJ Robertson] Yeah, yeah. And you can even make specialized versions of it for different teams, different information. Once you, we find that if you have like 20 to 50 pages of context, Claude does really well. If you get higher than that, then it starts missing things and so you might, if you have a lot of data, you might want to segment it down. ChatGPT and Google aren't as good at large amounts of context and that's why I think cloud is the best for this particular project.

[Sami Bedell-Mulhern] Well, okay, wait, yeah, that's really fun. I want to ask a clarifying question. So if I'm sitting here listening to this and I'm like, I run a non profit but I have no idea, like I would never know even what to put in 20 pages of a brand guide. Could you also go to your favorite tool and just say, hey, I'm trying to create a really comprehensive brand guide. Can you help walk me through the steps? Like, is that something we can utilize it for as well?

[TJ Robertson] Yeah, and I don't know if I can share a link. I'm happy to share the questionnaire I go through.

[Sami Bedell-Mulhern] Oh, that'd be great.

[TJ Robertson] But yeah, so I have a list of questions and they need to be customized a little bit depending on the type of business. But so for our clients, I just do an interview on Google Meet and we transcribe the interview. I go through all the questions and then I give it to, I have a prompt that I can share that as well. That just takes that transcript and, and breaks it into the brand bible based on those, those questions. But yeah, I think what you recommended is perfect too. Just yeah, have like chat GPT03 would be really good I think at coming up with the questions that you should answer on that kind of document. This is, yeah, I think we're like minded here. Anything I can outsource to the large language models. Now I'm like, I don't, I'm getting so lazy. I think that's going to be the downside of this whole thing. It's just like, wait, I don't have to do that. ChatGPT can do that for me.

[Sami Bedell-Mulhern] Well, but here's what I'll say is that you still have to tell it what to do. And I find for me it helps me be more creative because I'm a small team. I don't have other people that I can brainstorm with. And so it's my brainstorm, but I still have to like know where I'm going and know the direction that I'm going and be able to take what it gives me and say, okay, well yeah, that's great, but no, that's not quite what I had in mind because there's nothing more frustrating than when you're working on a whole project and then you get to the end. And you're like, wait a minute, I need to like, fix all of this. But you can go then into ChatGPT and it'll like, help just reword everything for you. But I have to know enough to be able to do that. Otherwise you're not going to have the quality of results that you want.

[TJ Robertson] 100%. Yeah. I think it's just like working with a new employee or an intern. You can't just bring someone in and be like, okay, go make some reports for us now. You're going to have to spend some time. You're going to have to, yeah, probably write some SOPs and like, really think about every step and what matters and how to do it. Like, yeah, it's a great point you bring up. People get lazy sometimes and they just, they want ChatGPT to just know exactly how they want something done. But you gotta, you gotta spend the time and really, really outline every detail.

[Sami Bedell-Mulhern] Okay, so let's go back.

[TJ Robertson] Yeah, and I think.

[Sami Bedell-Mulhern] Oh, go ahead.

[TJ Robertson] No, yeah, I think I was gonna go the same place you were start talking about.

[Sami Bedell-Mulhern] I was gonna say.

[TJ Robertson] So we've got our repurposing.

[Sami Bedell-Mulhern] Exactly. We've got now our foundation, so we can build off of that. Now we've got our content, then what's the next step for figuring out how we're going to repurpose that to promote it? Because there's nothing worse than creating content that nobody consumes it.

[TJ Robertson] That's true. Yeah. That's, I think a separate topic that I'm happy to talk about just briefly on that is the good news is algorithms are getting a lot better at servicing content that, that your audience wants. So it's like Mr. Beast has this quote. I don't know how people feel about Mr. Beast, but he has this quote that I, that I really like is when you think the algorithm doesn't like my content, just replace the algorithm with my audience. Because that's really where we're headed to, is the algorithms get better and better and better. It's. If you make good stuff that your audience really does want to consume, the algorithms will find them and put it in front of them as long as you're consistent. But, you know, if you're going to make the content, you don't want to just post it once. You want to post it as much as possible. Not just so that you're showing up in those sources, but also because now these large language models are crawling all those sources and that's feeding into the training data. It's making you get recommended more when you come up in searches. And so it's, it's just, it's just a superpower right now in terms of visibility. If you can blast content everywhere. And so the goal is to, and you don't want to make spam, you don't want to just make like AI slop and blast whatever you want, high quality content. And so that's like the first step is creating that workflow so you have the brand ambassador, it understands everything about you, but now you need some kind of input and then you essentially need a factory that can take that input and turn it into different pieces of content. So that's going to be different based on what kind of content you feel like making, because it should start with some kind of input from you. You don't want to give it something generic or you'll get something generic out. For me, I do short form videos. It's just while I'm walking my dog, I just take out my phone and I talk about whatever I feel like is important for people to know that day. And, and sometimes they do well, sometimes they don't. But I can, I can do it in five minutes. I edit it with AI using a video editor called descript, which makes it like really quick. It does all the cuts for me and then you feed it into the machine. And so whatever that input is for you, it could be a video, it could be an audio recording. If you feel uncomfortable being on video just talking to it, it could be a podcast, it could be something you've written, but you're going to create a prompt. And I have prompts I can share too. I got prompt templates coming out of my ears at this point. But so, but, but, yeah, so you, you set up the prompt template once, right? And it's going to include some kind of instruction about, hey, the user is going to give you a video transcript, or the user is going to give you an audio, you know, transcript, or the user's gonna give you a blog post. Your job is to turn it into a Reddit post and then you're gonna say, here's what's important when posting on Reddit and if you don't know, go to ChatGPT03 and ask what's important for posting on Reddit. Copy that response, put it into your prompt, and you can use deep research. If you want to get even more information from ChatGPT, you might want to vet it, make sure it's in line with your brand and all that. But it's still going to have access to that. This is all being done inside of your brand ambassador, so it'll still have access to all that information about your brand. Now you have a prompt with very specific instructions on how to turn your input into a different type of post. And it's just copy paste, get it out, read through it, make sure you're not posting something embarrassing. And then. But yeah, I think so you do this for each platform. So for me, each video I make, I post to 10 different platforms. The whole process takes me about 20 minutes, including editing the video. So it takes a while to set up. The first few times, the output's not going to be great and you just keep tweaking the prompt, keep tweaking the prompt. But once you have it fine tuned, it's never been easier to just create high quality content that sounds like you put hours into it and distribute it at scale.

[Sami Bedell-Mulhern] Yeah, well, okay, so many good things that you said in there. But one of the things that cracks me up is I was just talking to another consultant friend of mine. She works with nonprofits on the financials of things, and she's trying to use LLMs to build her workflows. And she goes, she called me and she goes, something's not right here. She goes, it's telling me that I should be posting on LinkedIn 10 times a day. That doesn't feel like that's right. And I was like, no, I would say that's not correct. I mean, that would be an insane amount of content to be producing. And I don't think the LinkedIn algorithms like that much content anyway. So I think to your point, like, always, gut check, don't just take what it says verbatim. Like, make sure you're doing your research and checking in on things. Like, you know, if something feels a little bit off, like maybe it is. But also 10 platforms for video. So that's a lot. Like, I mean, I know of a handful, but that's even more like, where all are you posting those things?

[TJ Robertson] Yeah, so sometimes it's a video, sometimes it's a text version based on the transcript of the video.

[Sami Bedell-Mulhern] Got it.

[TJ Robertson] So let's see if I can remember all of them. I post the video to YouTube, TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, X, Twitter, LinkedIn, and then also on LinkedIn, I'm making a post.

[Sami Bedell-Mulhern] Yeah, okay.

[TJ Robertson] Making a post on Reddit, on our blog on Substack. Okay, I'm missing one. It'll come to you as soon as it works. But yeah, so a lot of times it's yeah, it's so, yeah, so the video is repurposed a lot of places, but yeah, the transcript itself, and I should say our workflow for the blog is a little bit more involved because no one goes to your blog. The only reason people see your blog is because you rank in Google. And so, I mean, there are exceptions if you have a following. Some people have real followings on their blog, but for the most part, we're making the blogs to satisfy the machines. And so those have to be optimized for search. And so we have a process there where we will. It's like a four step workflow, but we have one project that'll take the transcript and identify the top questions answered by the transcript. These are questions that maybe people are searching for. We give those questions to ChatGPT deep research to find more data on each of those questions. And then we have a prompt that has very specific instructions on how to write articles for SEO that takes in that data, takes in the opinions from the transcript, adds links wherever we're sourcing data, and puts out the final blog post. I just have someone on my team, I do one video a day. They just turn that into a blog post. It takes them about 20 minutes and it's all systematized.

[Sami Bedell-Mulhern] Okay, so one of the other things that I really appreciated that you said about your content flow is that you create short videos because that's easy for you. You like to do it, you can do it in five minutes. And then you have a workflow to help you turn that into multiple pieces of content. I know that's not. We're talking more about AI tools, but like, that's so important to consistency for how we create the machine. And it's just casual, like you're not worried about. I mean, obviously I'm not worried about perfect lighting and backgrounds because my background's always a hot mess. But you're just out there. It's more about the value that you're providing and the quality of the content. And so what would you say to people that are just struggling with that first initial piece? Because you can take that piece and use AI to turn it into something bigger, but at least it's starting with you. Your personality, your value, your words.

[TJ Robertson] Yeah, I'm a big proponent of short form video. I try to convince all my clients to do it and I'm very unsuccessful. Most people are very uncomfortable being on camera, so I get it. But I'll tell you the same thing that I tell all my clients, which is it is a skill being Able to talk on camera without like feeling awkward or freezing up is a skill, but it's a skill you probably already have in that you're probably already going on zoom calls. You're probably already FaceTiming with friends. Like you are recording videos of yourself already. It's just for some reason, people get in their own head when they're by themselves and they see that red light go on. And so it just takes a little bit of time. But if you can put yourself in that headspace. I'm on a zoom call with a couple co workers, I'm on a FaceTime with a few friends and just talk with that same energy and that same authenticity. Because just like you said, it's not about professionalism. Especially with short form videos. Being professional can actually backfire. You want to be authentic, you want to be real, you want to. You want people to feel like they're getting a window into your life and they're really getting to see who you are. Video is the only way to build trust with people at scale. If you're not having a one on one interaction with them, like no one's going to trust you because of your website copy or a picture. Like, video is really the only way to connect. But to do that, you have to show up as yourself. And so my recommendation is just just record your first video today and plan on not posting it. Yeah, just. Just record it. Just because, because you could. You have to make like 10 or 20 bad videos that you're gonna feel like kind of awkward and cringe and then after a while you'll just, it'll start to feel a little bit more normal and you won't feel like, I mean, I, I record my videos while I'm walking around my neighborhood. I know my neighbor and I talk pretty loud. My neighbors are definitely hearing me scream to my. It just, it takes a while to kind of like not feel self conscious about that anymore. But the fact that 99% of people aren't willing to do this shows you how much of an opportunity there is. It's incredibly powerful. The other people that are fighting for your audience's attention aren't willing to do it. And so it's the easiest way to stand out and get attention.

[Sami Bedell-Mulhern] Okay, that's really interesting that you bring that up because two things then to that one is we might already feel like everybody's doing it because It's. We're on TikTok, we're on Instagram, whatever, and we see all these videos. So in our perception it might be well, everybody's already doing this, so how am I going to push into that? So that's number one. But number two, if, if 99% of people aren't doing it, then even more people aren't taking that content and repurposing it using the AI tools that you already mentioned. So now you're doing two things that most people aren't doing at all.

[TJ Robertson] Yeah, 100%. And there are, I mean, what, there's like 8 billion of us, right? A lot of people are making content online, but a small percentage of us are. And most people are making content online are. You know, they're taking a picture of their lunch and sharing it with their friends. Like, there aren't many people that are actually, you know, being a thought leader or like, really like sharing real valuable information and putting their opinions out there boldly. And I mean, just, you know, think about the people. You know, you, you probably know two to 500 people. How many of them are doing this right now that maybe that gives you a more accurate sense of, of, of the actual percentage. And it's, it's, it really feels like cheating. It's because it's rare people do just see you as an expert. It's, it's, it's like this unfair advantage. People, when I have someone reach out to me because of a TikTok video, they talk to me like they're talking to some like they know you celebrity or something. And it's, it's, it's, it's, it is really weird when you see someone on video talking confidently. You just kind of, they just become an authority figure. It's, it's, you know, it's kind of like being on stage suddenly. It's like, oh, that, that person must be important. And, and so, yeah, it's maybe scary to take that first step, but, but it's, it's. The payoff's huge.

[Sami Bedell-Mulhern] There's a reason why so many podcasts are now video podcasts. Like, that's more the norm now. Whereas that wasn't even the case. I mean, even a couple years ago, that wasn't necessarily the case. But yeah, because the power of the, like, you're saying that trust building. You know, we used to say, well, yeah, do a podcast because people will build trust with you so much faster because they hear you, they hear your emotion. And now it's not even that. It's, you got to do the video because you want to have that interaction. And also, I think, to your point, the more shorts you're pushing out regularly you're building like that friendship that you didn't even, you don't even know you're having with the person on the other side because they just get so comfortable with that cadence, that rhythm. Like, oh, I can expect to hear from tj. I wonder what TJ is going to have to say today. Like, you kind of build in that expectation when you're consistent.

[TJ Robertson] Yeah, 100%. I think podcasts a big reason why I'm going on podcasts recently. And thank you for having me on. It's just, it is, I think one of the highest leverage activities you can do. Like you said. Yeah, one podcast listen is probably like a hundred short form video listens in terms of like how much trust you're able to build, how much you're able to establish that relationship. But then, yeah, assuming the podcast on video, and most of them are now you probably have 10 or 20 clips that you could cut up and you have all those short form videos and each of those could be repurposed. So it's just a really good way, I think, to deliver content.

[Sami Bedell-Mulhern] I love that.

[TJ Robertson] Okay, well, I feel like we could talk about this forever because content creation is something you and I both do on a regular basis and AI has become our best friend. But as we kind of wrap this up, is there anything else or something that you've learned along the way or maybe something that you learned the hard way that you could maybe save time for folks that are just jumping into AI, but kind of. Any last thoughts or words of wisdom?

[Sami Bedell-Mulhern] Yeah, that's a good question. Put you on the spot.

[TJ Robertson] Yeah, I could go in a lot of different directions like that. I think some people are afraid to use AI. They think maybe they're behind and they can't see themselves catching up. But this technology is changing so fast that whatever, you know, those of us that are comfortable with AI, whatever skills we have right now, probably going to be obsolete in a year or so. Like, you can hop on now, start playing around with AI and you'll be caught up in a few months. You'll be right where all the rest of us are learning as the new tools and technologies evolve. But if you wait, you are going to get left behind. AI is not necessarily going to take your job, but other people who are doing the same thing as you are going to move a lot faster if they're using AI.
